This weekend, the Gibraltar Women’s Rugby team will travel to the UK for their first-ever overseas fixture, marking a historic step forward for women’s rugby in Gibraltar.
The squad, representing Gibraltar Rugby Football Union (GRFU), will face the Metropolitan Police Rugby Football Club Women’s XV on Saturday, 15th February, with kick-off at 4pm Gib time.
This match is a testament to the team’s progress, as more women continue to take up the sport in Gibraltar. Under the leadership of captain Sophia Lombard, the squad has been preparing intensively for what will be their biggest challenge yet.
Earlier this year, the team demonstrated their strength and unity by pulling a Mitsubishi truck through Main Street during the Gibraltar Cavalcade, raising awareness of women’s rugby and its growing presence in the local sporting scene. Now, they take that same determination onto the pitch in London for their first full XV’s squad international fixture.
Captain Sophia Lombard said:
“This is the biggest fixture of our season. We’ve worked hard to get here, and I’m so proud of the dedication shown by every player. Taking a full squad to London is a huge moment for us, and we’re ready to give it everything we’ve got.”
This UK tour is a key moment in Gibraltar’s rugby journey, demonstrating the increasing opportunities available for female players. GRFU remains committed to supporting and developing the women’s game, ensuring more players can compete at higher levels.
